Toddler head banging

My DD will be 3 in April and is constantly throwing her head back on any hard surface she can find when she is upset. We have hard floor downstairs so it’s horrible to witness, we do often catch her with a cushion but it’s almost like she’s go out of her way to throw it back on the hard floor rather than the cushion? 😳

I feel awful watching her get so distressed and then adding further hurt by hurting herself 😩

What happens when she hurts herself @kenadams5? Do you cuddle her?

kenadams5 · 12/02/2026 20:04

I try to but she just wriggles to get down and does it again. I should have added that she has developmental delay. She shows lots of autism traits and hasn’t got means of communication yet which I think is part of it, she also has these meltdowns when she’s trying to withold her poop.

That does sound very difficult. What help is she getting with communication? Has Glue Ear been ruled out?

And what help is she getting with poo with-holding?

Not a lot really. Had some SALT intervention but didn’t really suit the stage of development she was at. They had boxes of toys and things like that but she only really spins things so she just got the blocks and spun them. She was then referred to complex needs SALT and they’ve just gone in to her nursery to observe and are doing a care plan with targets. She only does 2 hrs a week because she of how upset she gets.

regarding the withholding we’re currently waiting to try movicol. She wouldn’t entertain laxido (even in juice) and lactulose didn’t do an awful lot.

Sorry yes her hearing was checked in a newborn style when she was around 1.5, they tried to do it again a few weeks ago but again she the test wasn’t developmentally appropriate.

I don’t have concerns re hearing, she can hear me open a pack of chocolate buttons a mile away 🤣

It’s good that the complex needs SaLT team are now involved.

Have you applied for an ECHP yet @kenadams5? And does your HV know of any playgroups or Nurseries fkr DC with SEN?

Have you got the Movicol yet? Just wondering why you’re having to wait?

I haven’t yet, I think nursery are setting up a meeting with the SENco and us after half term to start the process.

sorry I just mean we are waiting for the prescription for movicol, should be done today.

the GP rung me about her blood tests which were done because of her tendency to try and eat things like cardboard/paper/wall he said she’s very slightly anaemic so he’s also prescribed some iron for her. He also said he will write to comm paeds himself to try and expedite the appt. Fingers crossed.

You should try magnesium glycinate for the constipation x
