Really late teeth!!

My DD is almost 16 months and has bumps in her gums but no teeth! Dhs dentist has said that our dentist (who we are seeing on tues) will almost certainly refer her to hosp for an op...yikes! Has anyone had a similar experience??

Thanks for bumping me!!! This seems be a really rare problem...no one I know has had a similar thing...

dd2 was 12 months before she had nay, then she got them in a really wierd order.

I thought they waited til they were quite a lot older, closer to 2 or more. Generally children don't see a dentist til they are 2 anyway.

And they'd do an Xray etc before anything else, I'm sure.

dd just got hers at almost 12 months - and also in a really wierd order. I had been reassured that I shouldn't worry unless three was nothing by 2. I am sure they won't rush to operate unless they really need to. Must be scary for you - I know I became obsessed with checking dd's mouth every morning hoping for teeth - now they are coming through they are the bain of my sleep! Fingers crossed for mass teeth eruption for your dd!

I doubt very much that they will do an op at this age.

They are more likely to xray the area [if your dd co operates] to see how many teeth are present.

She is late, but until there have been investigations to see what teeth are present, suggesting surgery is premature.

Was your dd early at all? That can cause a delay with teeth erupting.

Thanks for all messages... I have booked a slot for DD to have an xray so will hopefully then know whats there. Have read on net that rarely the gums can harden so the teeth cant come through.... DD was normal birth, etc and pretty "textbook" with all development except mild hip dyplasia (shallow hips) so had to wear a harness for 2 months....maybe connected??

Not sure on any connection with the hips problem...

DD2 (born at 35 weeks) was 14 months when she finally got two at once on the bottom front. Then it was at least a couple more months before she got anymore. Nobody suggested it was that abnormal or that she needed a referral.

Been to dentist...no answers yet! She is referring DD straight to hosp, as she has never had a case of such late teeth! And she couldnt xray her then and there...drat! So looks like this will be a "long haul" kind of thing!! Please everyone cross fingers for a tooth or two to appear soon.....

dd2 is quite late getting her teeth. she did get her two bottom middle teeth at about 10 months, but then has had nothing until now.

she is just cutting the first of her top middle teeth, and she is 16 months.

I have idly wondered whether to persue this, but she is under the care of a paed anyway (low weight gain) and so i assumed they would say if it was wildly abnormal.

Should I talk to someone about it then?

DS was 13.5 months before his first 2 appeared (but he was born early at 30wks)- my DD is now nearly 12 months and still doesn't have any through (she was born at 36wks). DS incidentally is 3yrs 2months now and still missing 6 of his back teeth so still quite a late teether.

I was told they were unlikely to worry about this unless no teeth have appeared by 18 months to a year, and then do further investigations.

I really hope there is nothing to worry about, will be interested to hear what the x-ray shows and what the hospital say.

hiya my eldest had no teeth until 15 months where she cut 7 in two weeks, she was also really ill whilst it was going on and ended up with infections and on antibiotics. sorry to scare you i dont know if that was the norm, but i was told that they only worry if there is no teeth by 2 years of age.

My ds was 15 months before his first one came through, I'd been to dentist with him for my appointment about 6 weeks earlier and the dentist said that yes they were late but she would not be worried until he got to the age of 2 without any.

They didn't come through fast and furious, one or two at a time and with a while between each appearance and they didn't give him any particular problems, maybe a bit grumpy/feversh but nowt dreadful at all.

He's 3.7 now and we're still waiting on one of the back molars!

Hope this reassures you a bit, one thing I do remember is that he looked soooo different when he finally had a tooth, I was really sad that my baby just didn't look like one at all! (never mind the fact he was starting to try and talk and was walking by this stage )

Well Im just hoping DD is just at the far end of the scale with her teeth and that they are all present, just late! Its always slightly worrying when a doc/dentist looks at you and says they have never seen a case like it!!(and keeps looking, like "hmm, thats interesting, I could write a paper on that...)! Im now waiting for the dentist to decide exactly who to refer DD to at the local hosp who may well then tell us to keep waiting anyway! Its all good fun.....

my dd has six teeth which she got at about 14 months, she's now 17 months and no sign of any others. ds was late with his as well.
