Behind with reading

Hi my son is newly 8 and is at a reading level of a 6 year old I’ve been told today. Now his school is really supportive and his word per minute are now up to 50 which a huge improvement since October.
he was a slow starter to reading and really struggled with the early phonics and I’ll admit I don’t think we prioritised reading as much as we should of but it’s daily now.

anyone else’s child had to catch up in year 3 and any helpful suggestions? We do reading eggs and lots of reading as well as sight words and flash cards etc.

he’s at his level with math and his writing is good too, spelling is so so but I’ve been told to really push the reading as priority!

anyone similar stories and tips ( reassurance) would be great as I’m a little panicked and upset he’s this behind

How’s his reading now @songbird3086? Has he caught up any?

When my DS was this age he massively went off reading so I bought him a football magazine regularly and cut back on his screen time.

If we were eating breakfast I’d also plonk the cereal box in his eyeline. I figured reading anything helped Smile
