12 month old shrieking

This feels awful to say because we adore our baby and tried so long to have her. She’s absolutely perfect and developing well: almost walking, eating great, sleeping well but for every effort to communicate she simply shrieks. It’s high pitched and is absolutely killing us all. My husband, her older brother and I can’t stand it. It’s honestly gotten so bad that it’s ruining our home life.

I’ve tried all the different ways to help her stop. We’ve used shhhh, taught her signs, we speak to her constantly to try to teach her words. We’ve whispered, made sure nobody in the house shouts. She’s absolutely adored but we’re at our wits end.

does anyone have any advice or have been in the same boat but it’s now resolved. Is there an end? I don’t know how much more shrieking we can cope with. She turns one in a couple of days.

We’ve now resorted to shouting at her to stop when she just shrieks for fun and I feel terrible. She’s perfectly happy. No medical issues that I’m aware of. She just shrieks for every little thing!

Does she make any sounds apart from shrieking? How does she do on this simple progress checker?

SnugDuck · 30/12/2025 10:42

Thank you for this! It looks like she might need a bit of help. Unfortunately we are living abroad at the moment and the pediatrician doesn’t speak English and we don’t have resources for speech therapy here. I will use the advice on the website to work with her. She uses ‘dada’ for most things and waves and says ‘bye bye’ when anyone leaves the house. She understands simple instructions like ‘pass me X’ and ‘don’t touch’ so I know she’s doing ok generally but I think the speech portion is frustrating her.

If you’ve not got access to SaLT, can you arrange a hearing test for her, just to rule out Glue Ear?

Is she exposed to more than one language at the moment?

We have a Pediatrician appointment coming up for vaccination soon, so I will ask them then.

She’s exposed to multiple languages at the moment. We’re an English speaking household in the middle of Poland!
