Concerned about my 18 month olds development

My 18 month old is showing signs of autism. While he has many words, they are primarily nouns or adjectives and used to label things. He has a fantastic personality, he has little inside jokes with us, he knows his colors and shapes and is learning the ABCs, and he loves to read books together. However, I’ve noticed he is not pointing whatsoever, to request or show. He can follow a point and understands when I point at something, but he cannot do it at all himself. He also doesn’t seem to have spontaneous language. He likes to label things for us (his parents), but it’s not spontaneous communication with us.

does this remind you of any of your children?

Ok so if you think his language is a little off kilter, how does he score on this progress checker from Speech & Language UK?

My little girl only had around 10 words at that age and nursery were a little concerned. A couple months later she moved up to the toddler room and had a speech explosion! I wouldn’t be concerned just yet

My daughter got to that level of speech age 2.5 and even her nursery were not worried. There is not enough in your post at all to point to autism.

have you taken the m-chat? If he isn’t pointing (at all, or rarely) to request or show, he would be failing it and would be recommended to see a specialist for an autism evaluation.
