Four year old just cannot cope with emotions - what have we done wrong?

Hi! We’ve a four year old DS. He’s a fab boy, very bright, confident, active etc. But he cannot cope with negative emotions at all. He bursts into devastated tears when he loses a game worryingly frequently. He storms off/shouts blue murder at any small hint of unfairness (him not be allowed something usually!)
He doesn’t seem to be able to self-soothe or anything like that, he just explodes in rage or tears.
School have said he’s doing great academically but can get upset.
We’re really unsure what we’ve done wrong, and how to help him. Are there things we can do at home to teach him how to regulate? Or something? Please advise!

How old is he @quillfram? Just 4, nearer 4.5 or nearly 5?

Following as mine is exactly the same and also 4.5. I was heartbroken at parents evening when teacher told us he bursts into tears if spoken to negatively 😢

It doesn’t sound as though you’ve done anything wrong but you’re right that these things might need a little support.

The first one to look at is sleep. Does he go to an after school club and ehat time does he go to bed and what time is is usually asleep by? Does he wake naturally in the morning?

And how does he do on this simple progress checker?

And what have the school suggested so far?

Exactly! Gets very upset if he ‘makes the wrong choice’ 😕
