Hi my son is 3 at the end of November. He is non -verbal diagnosed with speech and language communication needs, on the waiting list for an autism diagnosis and has very low cognition, doesn’t even respond to his own name never mind an instruction. When out he has to use a pushchair. He cannot walk for a long period of time at all he has no understanding of dangers. When we’ve been to the park he does not understand and will go to strangers to pick him up and grabs at people (in a nice way) we currently get middle rate care for him, but I defo believe we should be entitled to high rate mobility (won’t give it until he is 3). When can i
phone to apply for it? Do I have to wait until his 3rd birthday? Or can I apply before hand knowing that we won’t get a decision till after his birthday?
thanks in advance.

So sorry you haven’t had any responses. Have you tried the SN Chat section? I think there might be a long running DLA thread in there Flowers

You ll need a diagnosis before you can get high rate mobility, especially for SMI you need a lot more than that on top to consider applying such as high rate care, proof of restraint in multiple settings and proof of a severe learning disability/IQ results/ rarely implication from lots of evidence that they would be considered to have that level of learning disability. I'd wait until you have more evidence and the diagnosis before trying.

My son's non verbal autistic and almost 5, he's been given LRM from his birthday as his behaviour isn't that extreme that he needs restraint indoors only pram or reins sometimes outdoors and we haven't had a learning disability assessment yet but he's more in the moderate learning disability range so he's not eligible under SMI and they evidence we have isn't brilliant for other categories.
