Stressful bedtime with 4 and 6 year old

Looking for some advice. I have a 4 and 6 year old, they are very hyperactive in the evening, playing games resulting quite often in tears.

our bed time routine in the week is generally go up for a shower at 6.15/6.30, then a story / school reading and bed for 7.15 ish.

every night when we go up for shower we end up with one or both of them protesting, screaming, crying and answering back / not listening.
I don’t know what we are doing wrong, I dread bed time which is a shame as it should be a nice time to relax and have a story etc but by the time we have had a shower etc I feel so frazzled I can’t wait to get them to bed.

any tips?
it doesn’t seem to make a different if it is one of us or both of us doing bed time. If both me and DH are home we generally all go up and one of us tidies upstairs while other supervises shower

At the weekend I try and shower them earlier in the evening and they eat dinner in PJs which does seem to help but this isn’t doable in the week
