How should I be getting my 10 week old to play?

My little boy is 10 weeks old and he only seems interested in gaga and goo goo-ing with people. He is not interested in the slightest with any of the toys or developmental items like rattle/bell toys or anything like that and just wants us to talk to him and tickle him ALL the time. He is our first and other relatives cant remember what exactly their LO's were up to at that age so I am just wondering if this is "normal".

Normal normal normal! He's ONLY 10 weeks old... all he wants is your love and attention.

Completely, utterly normal. Enjoy him! They can't see all that clearly and certainly can't hold stuff at 10 weeks. And (in the nicest possible way) FGS, don't worry about developmental items!

at 10 weeks they are listening and looking. When you cuddle him he should be looking at you, talk to him, that should be enough. He sounds perfectly normal to me.

I have an 11 week old who is the same. Completely un-interested in toys or anything like that. Her favourite thing is holding a baby gurgle conversation with me and her dad and when we pull faces at her.

Yes vey normal. At this age he doesn't even have proper control of his hands so won't know how to play or hold things. I didn't even bother with toys til 12- 13 weeks when he started reaching for things. Lots of interaction (and carrying around!) was all he needed. Toys are pointless at this age. Have heard that babies at this age find lines drawn on paper interesting as their vision is not focused fully so the lines look like they are moving which is supposidly stimulating for them. Think the Baby Whisperer books mention it but other then that just keep talking to him!

HV was saying he should be interested in some of his toys by now and I should be introducing some of his soft toys to him (which I have but he aint interested as you know from above) AND she thinks he should be into his cot mobile by now but he's only interested in the night light on it.

From all your posts I feel much better now. He loves the gurgle chat and only laughs when you pull the ugliest most stupid faces that you just KNOW look the worst when out in public heh heh

DS still not interested in soft toys and he's 20 mo. Some kids don't like them much (cars on the other hand...)

My DS didnt care about any toys, mobiles anything at that age. When he was about 4 months he got a good laugh out of a squeaky bunny!!! At this time your child just wants to be close to you and get used to being in the big world!!! Hold him close and give him all the love you can squeeze out and pray for a good nights sleep!! You sound like you are doing great!

Ignore the health visitor on this, honestly! Nothing to worry about. It's great that he is so interested in you and wants to interact. Far too much emphasis is put on toys when all they want to do is watch YOU and observe how you live and what your doing. My ds was only happy at 10 weeks if he was up in our arms nosing at what we were doing, they just want to feel like part of the family and try and make sense of it all. Really toys teach them nothing at this age and it was a few more weeks til ds got interested in them. He never liked his cot mobile, still doesn't! Don't think it's interesting to him!
