My 12 month baby is exclusively breastfed and will not take a bottle or a dummy. He is on solids though and has 3 meals a day plus snacks. I’m trying to night wean him. He currently co sleeps (last resort as I don’t sleep otherwise) and wakes every hour just to latch on and go back to sleep. I’m absolutely exhausted and can’t continue this. We tried last night and he cried for two hours before I finally gave in and latched him and he stopped instantly. I know I probably need to just push through and refuse and face a few sleepless nights? But has anyone any tips? Husband works night shifts so he can’t really help. Is it normal for them to be that hysterical if you won’t feed them to sleep? He’s good during the day for sleeping in the buggy or car etc.

Does DH have a couple of nights off together when tackling this might be easier? It’s just going to run more smoothly if he can help.

One thing that helped us was moving them to their own room. DC2 went from hpw you describe to waking once or twice for a full feed.

I would also look at this method of night weaning.

Sleep, Changing Patterns In The Family Bed — Jay Gordon, MD, FAAP

I can only imagine a mom and dad who are as tired as anyone can be, eager to see this article on sleep, and finding that we had made it unavailable for a little while!
