What is this all about...?

My 5 month old son used to go to bed so nicely without any problems. Now he goes to sleep okay but regularly wakes up within half an hour crying but with his eyes shut. I find it difficult to sooth him back to sleep. Normally feed him a bit more and after that resort to singing etc. Is this a common phase? Any tips? Why is he crying like this?

He's not on solids yet BTW

DD is about the same age, no solids either, and also has begun crying in her sleep. Possibly they're just at an age where they begin to have dreams or nightmares? DD seems to be beginning to teethe, so alternatively it could be sore gums disturbing her sleep. Just ideas... I'll be interested to see what others suggest.
