Is my 11 month olds development behind

I wondered if anyone can give me their experiences of their child’s development at 11 months please

For reference, I am a FTM with zero baby experience and therefore have no indication of typical development stages. Only that from what I have read online or milestones checkers (which I generally try not to do as it’s a rabbit hole I’m not willing to go down through fear of obsessing.

Im generally quite happy with where he is in all areas except communication. He is not yet babbling (no ma-ma, dada baba etc). He does make a variety of noises consonant vowel sounds and will mimic simple vowel noises - he seems to favour G sounds but nothing remotely close to the above. His name response is also not consistent. He will respond to his name maybe 30% of the time.

I see no other pink or red flags so I’m just wondering if this would be a concern to you or if anyone has had previous experiences similar I guess.

To note, he had his 9-12 month review and she wasn’t concerned. I have also decided to go no screens last week in the hope that it helps!

If anyone has any advice/ input or anecdote I’d be really appreciative.

Hi @Adventuremum1 I’ve not heard of the 9 to 12 month check, around here there’s a check at 12 months and then 3 years.

Did the HV ask you to fill in the 10 month Ages & Stages?

If not, I think it’s worth filling in the communication section. Don’t worry if he’s scoring in the grey, the assessments aren’t designed so that most babies score perfectly. It’s fairly normal for a DC to score grey in one or two areas as they can concentrate in different skills at different times.

If he does score in the grey though for communication it’s worth asking your HV to refer them for a hearing test, as this is fairly standard practice. Then when he’s reached 12 months you could do the 12 month Ages & Stages to see if there is any improvement Smile

Thanks for this @BunnyRuddington ! Our HV called it the 9-12 month review but we filled out 10 and 12 month questionnaire. He scored grey in the communication area but he had only just turned 10 months when we had it. I addressed my concerns with her in regards to name response and babbling and she just said they won’t do anything about speech until 2.

whilst I have seen more varied vocals, particularly in the past month, we are still not getting anything remotely close to mama, dada etc. He does however gesture and understand some of what we say. I’m not sure what is good for their age.

I did ring up today and she referred us for a hearing test and also gave us a number for speech and language therapist

It’s good that he has befn referred for a hearing test. Did he score in the grey in any other areas?

Adventuremum1 · 13/08/2025 06:54

No it was only communication that he scored lower in! I know they that babies only concentrate on one area at a time but as the months go by I guess it’s just starting to weigh quite heavy that maybe somthing isn’t right
