stinky breath!

My 2.5 year old has developed quite unpleasant breath - it smells like stale morning breath, but all day.

I brush his teeth twice a day. Probably not very successfully, because he has to do some, and I then I try to do some, and I'm sure it doesn't work out to be very thorough.
Anyone else found this with their toddler? And what did you do? I was thinking of trying one of those children's electric toothbrushes, but he seems a bit young....

Well, I certainly wasn't brushing my kid's teeth twice a day at that age. Probably once a week! Not good, but he didn't have bad breath.

It would suggest an underlying problem with the stomach. Is he pooing regularly? Does he suffer from abnormal wind?

My DCs get this with teething sometimes.

Also DD gets it when she has a cold. She suffers from asthma, and when she's congested she has smelly breath.

The dentist told me when I ennquired over my charges smelly breath it could be reflux - or just a side effect from eating a certain type of food.

coolbeans · 24/05/2008 21:32

oh dear, I hadn't thought of it being anything medical, just put it down to poor brushing technique. He doesn't seem to suffer from any digestive/stomach problems that I can see.
Not all of his teeth are through yet, and he is dribbling quite a bit at the moment - maybe teething then?

That's a good observation, cad. Come to think of it, ds gets bad breath when he's conjested.

Is that the answer, coolbeans?

Evening ladies. Don't want to scare anyone here but both my Mum, me and my dh have had our appendix out and about a week before we all had terribly smelly breath .
Get his tummy checked out too. Could very well be something digestive.
Though saying that my ds3 also gets smelly breath when his nose is blocked like cadelaide said.

Sometimes adenoids and tonsil problems can give rise to bad breath. Is he a sufferer?

christywhisty · 25/05/2008 20:20

My DS has sunus prblems which cause bad breath.

Every time DD is poorly her breath smells. It doesn't have to be a serious issue. A cold will do it.

Doralilymama · 31/05/2008 00:59

My dd1 had exactly the same thing at the same age. Smelly breath - no other symptoms. It turned out, after many visits to GP etc, that she had pompom stuck up her nose which had become infected. yuk. She had to get it removed in hospital. Apparently it's v. common. You might want to have a look.
