When did your dc(s) sleep for 12 hours at night?

Okay, I know every baby is different - and I know I shouldn't compare - but I like comparing! And I'm just trying to get a sense of the kind of 'average' age that people's babies start to sleep the whole night through.

I know some people have miracle babies who sleep for 12 hours very early on (like my ds1 who did so at 9 weeks [i was too much of mum novice to appreciate how extremely lucky i was at the time]. Sadly my ds2 is absolutely nothing like this! I also know that there are 2 to 3 year olds out there who have never slept a full night.

But when would one realistically, reasonably expect a little baby to be able to sleep through the night for 12 hours?
When did yours?

Very interesting. Absolutely nothing close to an 'average' answer yet...!

Although I suppose I should have asked: when did your DCs stop waking for a feed?

Exactly Mabel....yes they need more sleep...but they sleep during the day, and don't necessarily need it/want it/be able to take it all in 1 stretch.

In fact I don't think any of mine have had more than about 10-11 sleep in a 24hr period since they were a few months (6-9 maybe).

At 24m DD3 probably sleeps 10-11 hrs - with the majority being at night. She only has 1hr during the day.

DTDs had given up their day nap by about 28m and were sleeping about 10-11hrs at night.

hahahaha at baby! My baby was in Reception, aged 4.4. My next baby will no doubt be the same at aged 4.7 (roll on September)

DD 16 weeks. DS is 17 months and has NEVER gone longer than 4 hours unbroken.

Smithagain · 21/05/2008 21:41

About 18 months for both my DDs. But not totally consistently, absolutely every night.

There were occasional complete nights while they were still babies, but they were rare.

SmudgeyDoodle · 21/05/2008 21:43

DS was about 11 months. Before that he used to wake about 4-6am for a feed and that stage seemed to go on for ever! He's now 15 months and sleeps about 7.30-7.30 (or even 8.30 if we are really lucky!)
I think if your LO is waking for a feed and then going back to sleep, you have more hope that they might start to sleep longer. If LO is waking for a feed and then ready to start the day at 4/5/6 whenever it is, then maybe your just have one that doesn't need so much sleep. Good luck and hope you have a good night!

pagwatch · 21/05/2008 21:45

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Ds1 has just started. He is 14. And now he never wakes up

LadyJogsAlot · 21/05/2008 21:46

ds: 11-12 hrs a night from 8 months iirc

Bky · 21/05/2008 21:47

DD1 about 8 weeks.

DD2 is currently 9 weeks and can manage about 10 / 11 hours most nights.

It seems it would be a good idea never to expect a baby to sleep through 12 hours in one go!

My DS1 has never slept more than 11 hours in one go. He started sometimes sleeping through the night at 10 mths but that would have been 8.30pm to 6.30am. He used to have quite long daytime naps though. His sleep didn't change when he dropped his nap either.

DS2 slept 8.30pm to 7am at about 8mths. He can occasionally go for 12 hours now (he is 4.8yrs) but only if he is ill or exceptionally tired for some reason.

Tbh, I worry if they sleep more than 11 hours - it doesn't seem natural! I am not complaining as they were asleep when I needed to be asleep and I got a couple of hours to myself in the evening so I couldn't ask for more.

Piffle · 21/05/2008 21:58

ds2 is 14 mths and has done 12hrs one maybe 3-5 occasions. Usually good for 8-10 so one wakeup and feed a night
regularly dd was all of her teeth coming then she slept from 2.3 yrs onwards.

snickersnack · 21/05/2008 22:03

dd at the age of 13 months (having hitherto been absolutely vile at night) - and now will do 7pm to 7am about 2 nights a week. The other nights she either goes to sleep a bit later or wakes a bit earlier or wakes in the night at least once or twice

ds - not a chance. If there were an emoticon for a hollow laugh it would be here

DS slept through at 2½. He's 3 now and it's unusual for him not to sleep through. DD is 13 months and wakes up three or four times per night.

I wouldn't expect a baby to sleep through until 18 months at the earliest but that's just my babies. They're all different. And you can of course leave them to cry and cry. If you want. I'm sure they'll learn soon enough that nobody's coming. Sorry, not a dig at the OP. It's just another thread.. . . .

EachPeachPearMum · 21/05/2008 22:58

Oh, you meant what age!

Well, sort of 14 months onwards, but every time she's ill, teething, a little upset, whatever, she still wakes 2 or 3 times screaming. She's 2.3 now....

jamila169 · 21/05/2008 23:02

Probably not until they reach their teens, whereupon instead of the DC's waking me up at 5.30 in the morning, i will take great pleasure in going into their rooms and tipping them out of bed, while shouting 'now you know what it feels like!!!'

Loshad · 21/05/2008 23:08

Never - I mean I've had 4 dc's, and the youngest is 7 but i've never had a child sleep for 12 hours - tbh i'd probably panic deeply if they did. None of them slept through reliably for at least the first two years.

Reesie · 21/05/2008 23:28

Mine started sleeping through at about 13 months - 11 hours. Although that is by sleeping in the middle of the bed between me and dh!

MabelMay · 22/05/2008 09:26

Bky!!!
Can we swap???

LazyLinePainterJane · 22/05/2008 09:58

Ds started sleeping 7-7 at 5 months. He still does at 2.9. Today he slept 7-8 [lie-in mmmmm]

tor74 · 22/05/2008 10:28

DS (now 2.5 yrs old) started sleeping from 8pm - 7am at around 3 months. We did controlled crying though for three nights to get him to do this, don't shoot me!

We had a whole year of 11 hours a night and then had three months of night wakings/early mornings. Then all good for another year and now had two months of night wakings/early mornings. Until last night...8pm until 8am!! This was about the fifth time he has ever done 12 hours.

MerryMarigold · 22/05/2008 10:30

My ds is 2.5 and sleeps about 10 hours per night. He naps for a couple of hours in the day too, which is important time for me to nap as well! He started 'sleeping through' at about a year, I think, although there's still plenty of times when he doesn't manage it!

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2008 10:32

DD1 six months no hassle. DD2 about 8 mnths with a lot of assistance!
