9 month old becoming very aggressive and tantrumy

not sure why?

pulls my hair, shouts if I remove something he wants, screams if doesn't get his way, throws food etc

then reverts back to very shy and and delikcate baby as form birth!

have so many probs as it is

but how do you know if this is normal or simply development??

when i say "no" he cries more and more and am so tempted to jack it all in!

ds is 11 months and almost scratched my face off on the bus the other day...

I think this behaviour is because he is 9 months old -entirely normal. Go with it - next phase along in a minute......

esp during this stage - how do i discipline him???

distracting is prolly best at this age.
a firm "no" and then distract.

You don't discipline him! It would mean nothing. If its painful (eg biting) just withdraw attention like eye contact for a bit and put him away from you. There is no such thing as a 'bad child' and a 'good child'. All children are just people, so a mix of things that please you and things that don't. At the moment he can't think about what you want or like, he's not old enough. he is just focussed on himself. It's normal. He's a tiny, tiny little baby.

also, ds acts like this most when tired so maybe watch as a cue for a nap time.

yes, regular food and sleep makes a big difference.

DS started having tantrums at 9 months - which I found quite alarming at the time. He's lovely now, despite being 2.6, and is a good talker for his age. Still very clear on what he does and doesn't want though!
Agree with above comments on discipline - he's much too young for it. Distraction and putting dangerous/forbidden things out of the way will help a lot.

Hi bumbly. I remember you from when your DS was little - our two were so similar, such hard work! I hope your DS is easier now - mine is a lot better (or I've just got used to it .

He also screeches and goes stiff when displeased. At this age they don't have any other way of communicating so we can't really blame them for being so direct about things! I agree that discipline isn't something they're ready to understand. When DS starts kicking off I just find some sort of exciting toy/make a silly noise/dance around like a loon etc.

If he's clambering over the TV or chewing on an electrical cable and we say "No!" he just looks up and grins - don't think it has much (if any) meaning to him just yet ....

Try not to worry - you've just got a livewire, I bet

I agree with Vivace, he is just a tiny baby and doing what babies do. I think people can have really high expectations of their children at such a young age, I think you need to chill a bit (easier said than done, i know!) and accept that babies moods do change from one minute to the next, and often for no apparent reason....

kate - i know easier said then done - just have no experience of babies at all so with mine it is all a complete unknown! and very hard!
