My boy is 12 months in 2 weeks and he’s still not showing interest in crawling or walking. He still can’t pull to stand or get from laying down to sitting up. He can roll but doesn’t do it much as hates being on his front. He cried when we try help him crawl. He can stand with a walker but falls over after a few minutes doesn’t take any steps. Every single baby at baby group same age and younger are so ahead of him. It’s an awful feeling. We had 9-12 month check and she wasn’t worried but I can’t help but feel worried

Does he bear weight on his legs at all @Elliejo96 for instance if you let him hold onto your fingers will he stand fir a short while or does he drop to the floor?

And dod the HV book a follow up appointment with you?

Elliejo96 · 27/03/2025 11:06

Yeah he can stand doing that. She did yeah it’s in April

It’s good that they can weight bear. Did you know that crawling has recently been removed from the milestones? So that should be one less thing to worry about Smile

Walking isn’t a concern until 18 months and that’s a whole 7 months away. If you think how much they’ve changed over the last 7 months they’ll have a whole host of new skills by then.

It’s also good they the HV has booked a follow-up appointment. Did they ask you to fill in the 12 month Ages & Stages before the last appointment?

Elliejo96 · 29/03/2025 08:07

Yes I did notice crawling wasn’t on the milestone sheet. We filled it out and he’s doing ok with everything else it’s just his movement he’s not interested in pulling up to stand or can’t get from laying down to sitting so I’m getting worried now. Just wondered if anyone else’s baby was like this as all my friends babies are way ahead and younger than him . It’s not a nice feeling but I’m sure he will get there. He gets really really upset when we trying to help him crawl he doesn’t like being on his belly at all and never has. Thanks for your reply

Keep an eye on things but it’s probably a bit early to worry now. In a similar situation I found the health visitor pretty useless, just got a follow up phone call at about 15 months and told to call back at 18 months if still not walking.

My DD did turn out to have hypotonia (low muscle tone) and a gross motor delay. She started physio at 19 months but would have benefited from earlier physio.

My sister on the other hand didn’t walk until 18 months and there is was nothing wrong with her, she was just taking her time.

Elliejo96 · 29/03/2025 08:23

thank you how did you find out about low muscle tone did you go to the doctors. My HV said if I’m really concerned go to the doctor to rule out medical I think I might book an appointment just incase

The physio identified the low tone. The GP didn’t think there was anything wrong and just told us bum shufflers are usually late walkers. She only started bum shuffling at 13-14 months and was still immobile at 12 months.

If he’s reluctant to be on his tummy, which some babies naturally are, have you tried taking him swimming?

Elliejo96 · 29/03/2025 12:14

Yes he loves swimming :)

That’s good. It should help him build some muscle Wink

My son always hated being on his tummy too. Didn't show any signs of crawling or moving until the day before his birthday. I went to get him up from his nap and he was sitting up. I thought oh, how's that happen?! He crawled the week after his birthday, pulled to stand at 14 months, walked properly at 17 months. He's 21 months now and running all over the place. You wouldn't know he was late to walk looking at him. Some just like to take their time working out how to do things before they all of a sudden do it seemingly out of nowhere.

Elliejo96 · 30/03/2025 19:45

This is really reassuring, Thank you so much!

My son never crawled and didn't walk until nearly 20 months! And then within a few weeks he was walking, running and climbing! There was nothing wrong with him, he was just taking his time! I'm Sure it's the same for your child.

bathbooknap · 10/04/2025 11:07

My little girl never crawled. She started bum-shuffling at 15 months ish and then walking at 17 months. If you are concerned you can speak to your GP or health visitor about a physiotherapist check-up. We did this and they were not concerned at all. She's now nearly 18 months and has started climbing the stairs with help. I know its hard when other babies seem to be ahead.

How is your boy doing now? My son is the same at 11 months and even though he’s my second I’m still worried!

Bronze0 · 01/08/2025 21:22
