how do i stop dd getting out of her straps?

dd(20mo) has recently perfected the art of getting herself out of her straps; she can get right out of the buggy but i've just accepted the fact that we can't go shopping for any length of time and she'll have to start walking more.
i am worried about her car seats though, as she can get her arms out of the the top of both of them, even when we pull them really tight. the bottom straps are still holding her in but i know its only a matter if time before she'll let herself out properly.
does anyone have any advice?

i saw something in a catalogue once but when i phoned the company they said it was only avaible in america... it was a strap that went between the straps to stop little one escaping

did your dd just grow out of it, chocspiders? am worried as we are never in the car for more than 20 mins here and not high speeds, but will be driving in england in the summer and dd will be in the car for longer periiods and at faster speeds then ,so far more dangerous if she gets out!

yes she did grow out of it. but it is worrying... i wonder if the strap has now been brought out over here...
the person i spoke to knew exaclty what i was about to ask..as loads of people ask.. so very common

ok maybe not. things that worked for me [cruel mother alert] after the usual tactics of making a great deal of fuss and explaining to the child why they must wear their seatbelts(no effect),telling them you've got to wear it (still no result), etc etc all failed, I explained calmly and firmly that if they took the straps off then I would put them out of the car. With DS1 I had only to slow the car down and drive on the rumble-strips to scare him witless and get the straps hastily put on and never removed again . The other two DC are more confident and in each case a protesting tot was removed from the car at a convenient grass strip at the layby, plonked down and told "if you come in my car, you wear your straps. no straps, no ride in the car" (told you i was cruel) it only took the once. At the time of this oscar-worthy performance with DD, two 'older' ladies were walking past - grinning from ear to ear and winking at me, trying to look stern when passing DD. They'd obviously understood the picture perfectly

i like your tactics giggle! i think that might be what i have to do; i'm not averse to being a cruel mumy in this case! i will have a look for some sort of clip though. it's more when she's with my dh i worry about, he gets really impatient and she realises it and tries even harder!oh, and i LOVE understanding passers-by!

I think the clip was banned as there was a issue with it that made it unsafe.
My DD did this too and I used similar tactics to gigglewitch - she soon stopped!

i can see how things that intefere with safety straps could be an issue.
