Our 14-month-old used to eat everything - I mean literally everything, especially vegetables - until one year old. Broccoli used to be one of his favourite snacks and he'd eat it plain. People used to comment on how lucky we were that he was a good eater!
Cut to two months ago and he now eats virtually nothing. He will literally only have fruit (any) and bread. I used to limit fruit before he went to nursery because I was afraid this exact situation would happen where he'd reject everything else (maybe I screwed up doing this, I'm not sure), but now that he goes to nursery, they offer him fruit after every single meal - so he's basically decided that's all he eats. He won't touch the tomato pasta I used to make him, lentil dhal, eggs, any kind of fish (which he used to love), and he will not even try to eat any vegetables. He literally just looks at them and throws them on the floor.
If either bread or fruit isn't served at a meal, he'll have a tantrum and scream, so I took somebody's advice to serve a small portion of 'safe' food that I know he'll eat alongside his meal and for him that's bread. I don't give him fruit myself - virtually ever - in the hope that he'll stop expecting it from me and give up. I also never offer him an alternative at mealtimes (I never have) hoping that he'll get out of the idea that he can cry and get something else. It's been two months and up until now, I've been pretty easygoing about it and I still offer two portions of vegetables alongside bread and butter and a protein, even though I know he won't touch anything except the bread and just throw it all on the floor. But now we've hit the two month mark, I'm starting to worry that he's not getting any nutrition except from his formula, which he has twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing at night).
Unfortunately he has CMPA so dairy isn't an option. I can't remember the last time he's eaten a vegetable. I've tried pretending to eat it (he doesn't care), feeding him elsewhere, sitting him on my lap and feeding him. None of it works. Is it time to see the GP? What else can I do? I know kids go through these phases but I have basically tried everything and I can only imagine he's starving hungry/feeling sick just not eating anything much all day long.
Has anyone been through anything similar? I'd love to know how it ended up for you and whether we could be nearing the end of this two-month hunger strike!
Thanks so much.
