Child being left out at school

My 5 year old son made a close friend after starting school this year. I've been friendly with his mum and we've even done play dates. However recently he has been saying they don't play together anymore, which is fine I know kids go between friend groups.
After a couple of days off sick he went back to school where I physically seen this boy running away from my son in the morning with another friend. He came out the gate crying before school had even started, I gave him a cuddle and sent him back in but he came home saying the same friends had told him to go away at playtime and he played himself. My heart is breaking for him I don't understand what has went so wrong when they used to be so friendly. How can I help him? I've noticed a change in his mood the past few days and I think it's down to this at school.
He is quite a sensitive soul and although very funny and sociable I think it takes him time to find his confidence in a situation with other kids.

all very normal for 5 year olds
our job is to explain the ebb and flow of friendships and to try and play with others at playtime
and if it deteriorates, then you have a word with teacher

Agree with the PP. is there another child that you could invite around for tea or ask them and their DM around for a cuppa after school? I found that a good way of getting them to focus on other DC.
