Constipated new born, anxious mess!

Hi everyone,

I wasn't sure where to post but wanted to hopefully get some feedback on the following.

My baby is 5 days old and having pooed all her meconium out in hospital she now hasn't passed a stool in over 72 hours. She is formula fed and feeding really well, frequent wees and not in much discomfort although you can tell at times she is trying to get something moving. She is burping and passing wind fine too.

Starting to feel overly anxious about this and feel like it will never come! We have a Day 5 appt. tomorrow so will ask then too.

No harm contacting the midwives or GP if you worried. My DD was an infrequent pooper as a newborn and we were told to seek medical help after 5 days.

We had a very similar situation to what you describe and she did eventually do a poo after 4 days or so. As long as it’s soft when it cones it’s probably just her digestive system working stuff out. You can try bicycle legs and tummy massage. Sitting in the Baby Bjorn bouncer was strangely effective for us too, so much that I brought a second cover as it kept getting poonamis on it.

Our day 2 midwife said after 72 hours go to A&E however a five day old baby in A&E sounds like an awful idea to me with all the germs. We have our day 5 appt. tomorrow so will see what they say then :)

Is she still peeling plenty and is she bright and alert at times?

Yes peeing frequently and sleepy as new borns are but has wake windows that are eyes wide and alert.

So, so glad she's pooed for you. Hope she, and you, are feeling a bit more relaxed now
