18 months and pointing

Hi everyone,

Just a query on pointing. I've read it seems to be the be all and end all when it comes to ASD.
My son just turned 18 months and he is just not a big pointer. He is very ahead gross motor and has been since young so he is able to get most things out of reach. If there is something he can't get, he will hold out his arm, whine and look at me. If he wants a drink, he will go to the cupboard and get his beaker out and give it to me. Just examples

Pointing to share interest started about 16.5 months but again, not a big pointer. He will point maybe 1-2 times a day to share interest but shares other ways like holding up items or example looking at tv, looking at me and saying JJ and then back at tv.

He has about 15 words and does alot of singing! And does actions to songs. He waves, claps, blows kisses, high fives, thumbs up, sshhh, gives, shows, reaches. Imitates well, pretend play is ok, he puts anything in the shape of a phone to his ear, feeds and gives teddies a drink. When daddy is leaving the house, he runs to the door, waves and says bye bye dada.

He understands simple commands like go brush your teeth, get down, let's go for a nap, let's go out (he goes to the door), put that in the bin, go get your piggy..

So I'm not sure if I'm right to have concerns about the infrequent pointing. In terms of the MCHAT, for the pointing question it doesn't specify how often they do it, just if they do it so it throws me a bit!

Thanks for reading!

I'm not an expert but I think it means do they do it as opposed to do they never do it?

How does he do on the 18 month Social & Emotional Ages & Stages?

Thank you for your reply TinyMouseTheatre. He scores 10 on that, 15 if I put the pointing down as no x
