2y/o boy only babbling and few gestures

My 2yr1month old boy is only babbling and has very few gestures. He will point to something when I give him a choice but will not shake his head for no (or say it) or nod for yes (or say it). I got him referred for S&L at 17months but he was seen for the first time this month at 2yr1month and the therapist gave me advice that in my opinion is too advanced for him.
He can follow instructions like bring me the ball or go get your drink or sit down to get your shoes on etc so his understanding is very good. I can say bring me the cow/sheep/pig etc annd he does all that but he isn’t great with copying and generally only uses the sounds be, me, gaga, gagy, gee and occasionally says mummy. He will clap if I clap and give a high five if I ask.
I’m kind of at a loss for what to do as S&L say it will be a 6month wait minimum for his first actual therapy session.
Has anyone been in a similar situation with their son? Is there another form of learning/teaching I can try while waiting for therapy?

Has he had a hearing test to rule out Glue Ear @mcalise?

@TinyMouseTheatre no I’ve never heard of that and no one has mentioned it before. I will look it up now! He has been poking at one of his ears a lot recently and just finished a course of antibiotics relating to it but no one mentioned any other potential issues.

Definitely ask your HV to refer him for a hearing test then. I'm surprised that she hasn't already if he's not speaking at 2. Well not surprised as my HV was useless

There's some information on Glue Ear here.

It might be useful to ask to see your HV and fill in both the:

2 year Ages & Stages

& the 2 year Social & Emotional Ages & Stages

Don't worry if he bombs the communication sections, that could purely be down to anything like glue ear Flowers

@TinyMouseTheatre I've completed that questionnaire and he didn’t do well in any category with communication being the lowest.
I’ve contacted HV this morning to get a hearing test arranged so hoping they will get back asap!

Did you do both of them @mcalise? I would show the HV the results for both Flowers

@TinyMouseTheatre both links took me to the same document. The HV called back this afternoon and said he should have been referred to audiology at the same time he was referred to S&L so he has been referred today but it could be a couple of months before we get an appointment. Reaching out to healthcare friends to see if anyone locally knows someone that could take him sooner.

So, so sorry. The Social & Emotional Ages & Stages should he here.
