Has this happened to your DS? You will be shocked.

Has anyone got any experience of little boys touching each others willies?

My DS has now been caught doing this twice with the same child - once a few months ago and again last week. He 'fessed up as soon as he was asked and swears he's never done it with anyone else. This last time he said it was the other boy's idea, but I have no way of knowing if this is true.

I don't want to make him feel bad, but I did tell him that his willy was private and that children mustn't touch each others.

I was really horrified when it happened. I didn't tell the other parents as it was my instinct to deal with it myself. I now just keep him well away from the other boy.

I've also taken the opportunity to say something about inappropriate touching by grown-ups. Anyway, since the day it happened I haven't brought it up again. Should I?

Would you be shocked if this happened to you, or is it a normal part of growing up? I'd really appreciate some advice here.

He's 5 and 10 months, by the way.

It's normal for children to be interested in each others private parts.

If they think it's taboo and a big deal is made out of it they will be more likely to do this kind of thing in secret.

I would be wary of keeping him away from the other boy for this reason alone - you don't want to make him feel like he's done something wrong.

TeeBee · 30/04/2008 17:15

Personally I wouldn't be bothered. Normal exploration I'd say. Keep catching my DS (5) in bed with various girlfriends with rosy cheeks. He says its his favourite game but I'm not allowed to know anything else about it.

Think you're right to point out that its a private area, but I would think that its nothing to worry about really and certainly not anything for him to feel guilty about.

TeeBee · 30/04/2008 17:18

Besides, they're male, they have willies. Why would we be shocked? We are ALL well aware how much the male species are fascinated by their own willies. Your boy has just found a kindred spirit!

cornsilk · 30/04/2008 17:20

I'd say it's pretty normal.

GooseyLoosey · 30/04/2008 17:20

Would not be shocked at all. Have tried hard not to teach my children my feelings about various body parts as I don't want them to feel inhibited in the way that I do. I would just say that willies are private bits and should only be brought out at home.

Would also say that ds (4) spent at least half of his nativity play with his hands down his trousers as he was bored and just wanted something to fiddle with. We did have a little chat about that as the audience was rather more riveted by ds than the play!

pagwatch · 30/04/2008 17:21

Not terribly shocked I'm afraid

"boys fascinated with bums and willies and pooh jokes - film at 11.00!".
Nah - not so much.

It is normal for them to be interested in each other. don't over discuss it or it will become a big deal.
It is just a stage. He will grow out of it in 14 or 15 ...or 20 years.

Mercy · 30/04/2008 17:25

Don't keep him away from the other boy unless you have other concerns. It's normal behaviour.

My ds and his friend often wee in the toilet at the same time and have a good look at each other's willies (they are 3 and 4).

My dd and ds often have a bath together and do similar stuff.

But yes, you were right to talk about inappropriate touching.

Tommy · 30/04/2008 17:27

please don't be horrified - at this age it's normal. I tell my DSs that the areas covered by their pants ar private and they shouldn't let anyone else touch them there.

It's a ll a big joke at that age though - willies, bottoms, etc

TurkeyLurkey · 30/04/2008 17:30

I too think its a normal for a child his age. I once found my DS who was about 6 at the time inspecting his sisters fanjo, who was about 5. I took it to be normal and nothing pervy about it. It was done with complete innocence and so not shocking in the least.

Please try to not worry about it.

booge · 30/04/2008 17:33

Not surprised, I can still remember the I'll show you mine if you show me yours times from childhood, curiosity.

cluckyagain · 30/04/2008 17:36

I was talking about this very thing last week with friends - entirely unshocked, vastly normal curiosity, did the same thing myself at 5 yrs old.

tooshocked · 30/04/2008 20:10

Sorry - had to go offline for a bit.

Thanks for your reassurance. This time it was just touching but last time I'm fairly sure that at least one of them put the other's willy in his mouth. Again, could put it down to curiosity, but still. DH found them last time, and this is what it looked like.

They were then in his bedroom and the other boy had found some old nappies under the bed, put one on and kept saying 'shall I do a wee in my nappy?' It just seemed odd.

Usually, my DS doesn't like this other boy much. They are in the same class and this child isn't well behaved, which makes DS a bit uncomfortable. Also he is extrovert, DS introvert, etc. I think there is some fascination on DS's part even though he doesn't like him much. I don't like his behaviour anyway, so not keen to encourage friendship. When this boy first moved into our road aged 4, I heard him telling DS 'you're mummy has got the biggest boobies in our road'.

I haven't mentioned this again since the night it happened. Just told him that I didn't want him to do it any more.

Maybe it is just natural curiosity.

Ok, you do have other concerns then, fair enough.

mumnanny1 · 30/04/2008 21:00

I have known boys of about this age doing similar things. I was shocked at first too, but I think it's very common. I think you shouldn't make too much of an issue of it. You already addressed it at the time.I would just keep your son away from the boy as it sounds like he's not the greatest influence.
