Hi all,

I had a health visitor today for my 7 week old (8 weeks tomo) and she has seen a sacral dimple, she said she could see the end so she wasn’t worried but referred me to GP anyway, I had his check up on Wednesday just gone and doctor didn’t say anything, went back today to same doctor and she said I checked for that and couldn’t see anything and still can’t see anything, however, upon further inspection at home I can see a little line? I am going to go back to the GP and ask for a diff doctor but wondered if anyone has anything similar? I think I actually have one myself but never took any notice!

My daughter has a sacral dimple. It was picked up in hospital after birth. Nobody had any concern what so ever as you could see the end of it. My understanding is it is of no concern unless you can’t see the end of the hole or there is a theft of hair near by as that suggests a problem with the spinal cord like spina bifida. When I questioned the doctor further he said my daughter’s dimple as it was so shallow was of no more concern than a dimple on the cheek. Anyway she crawled at 6 months and talked at 1, she’s 3.5 now and is absolutely fine.

interestingly my son who is 16 months also has one, his has never been picked up and it’s even more shallow than his sisters so I didn’t bother chasing it up. Hes running about and practicing jumping is his new favourite pass time.

Sorry also just to add the only thing the doctors mentioned I might want to be mindful of is making sure you clean the dimple fully during nappy changes, it can get filled with poo and can be easily missed when cleaning and that can cause skin irritation and infection so just give a once over then nappy changing and you’ll be fine.
