Is it possible (and safe) to put a 16m in a "bed"

DD has always co-slept with us really, yeah I know I know but it was the only way we could get any kip! Now we really want to put her in her own room but the concept of the cot to her is just ridiculous so she will not even stand it for one second, certainly not to fall asleep in.

She has been walking since 12m, very mobile and gets down safely (feet first) off the bed and sofa so i was wondering if we could convert the cot into a bed now for her. Or is this a complete no-no?

my dd2 went into an ordinary bed at this age

i put a rolled up duvet on the floor next to it for a while but never had those bar things

she was fine

Sorry I have no advice, but I will be watching this thread avidly as yesterday I went to get DS up and he'd done it himself and if he will insist on getting out of bed himself I'd rather he could just slide out of a bed than throw himself out of a cot!

nailpolish · 17/04/2008 09:41

i put both my dds into a regular size single bed at 18 months. i ahd a bedguard but i didnt use it for long

they loved it and slept better for it.

go for it

Put DS1 in a low bed at this age and he was fine. Also did the duvet next to the bed
At first he stayed in the bed as I don't think it occured to him that he could actually get out, then we had a few nights of finding him asleep on the duvet on the floor as he'd worked out he could get out, but again resolved that pretty quickly.
Good luck

When my dd was about 12m she would no longer sleep in her cot (she hated it) so I put her in a single bed with a bed guard and she slept brilliantly

Not sure about coverting your cot (unless it is a cot bed- for toddlers) but would definately encourage your dd in a single bed

Good luck

My dd slept in a bed from about 1yo as she kept climbing out of her cot, need a bit of perseverance putting them back in but definatley safe with a side on.

HappyMummyOfOne · 17/04/2008 20:51

DS went to a bed from his cot at 12 months as caught him climbing out one morning!

We had one of those little tyke car beds so didnt need a bed guard and it was very low so he could get in and out fine.

Divastrop · 17/04/2008 20:55

my ds1 also went into a single bed at 12 months, with a rolled-up duvet on the floor.i think dd1 was 18months when i converted her cot bed.

(think i may be a bit over-protective of dd2 as she has only just gone into a toddler bad at 2.4 years, and that was only because i needed the cot bed for dd3)

serin · 17/04/2008 22:18

We took the mattresss off a single bed and DS slept on that from 12 months as he was climbing out of the cot! It looked awful but at least there was nowhere for him to fall.

carmenelectra · 17/04/2008 22:27

I put ds1 in a bed at 15mths and he was just fine.

It was a low bed from IKea that started of 'short' and extended out. Sounds like you dd would be fine.

Ineedacleaner · 17/04/2008 22:44

DD went into a toddler size bed at 16 months old. She had started climbing out the cot and was waking herself up banging off the sides. I put the cot matress on the floor and she never fell out of bed until the night I took it away for the first time.

bigdonna · 18/04/2008 08:50

my dc never slept in a cot so slept in my bed then went into big bed .my ds went into a double bed and he loved it!!!.my dd had a mesh side on.they were both about 13mth

Shoegazer · 20/04/2008 19:16

It will be fine, my DD went into a toddler bed at 11 months, as she hated her cot so much (nice to hear DD wasn't the only one purplepillow!). I would not have even thought about it but HV recommended it as she could walk and climb and was not happy in cot.

Nemoandthefishes · 20/04/2008 19:17

its fine all mine were in beds by 12mths [all early walkers] and it has never caused a problem..couple of times have fallen out of the bed but no major injuries.

bellavita · 20/04/2008 19:19

both my ds's went into beds at 12 months.

eandh · 20/04/2008 19:22

DD1 went into a single divan bed at 15months with bed guard

DD2 went into toddler bed at 12 months (after catapulating herself out of cot) she had a bed guard but got annoyed with it so its been taken down now

Both have fallen out once but never did it again but both have a habit if creeping into our bed around 4.30am when DH leaves for work

shouldbeworking · 20/04/2008 19:23

Went upstairs to find my ds2 balanced astride the cot bars trying to climb out. I decided he would be infinately safer in a bed. He was 12 months old.

amidaiwish · 20/04/2008 20:02

DD1 went into a toddler bed at 15m and DD2 at 18m.
both were fine.
