Delay in Understanding almost 3 years old?

my question is in the title really….
what would be considered delayed understanding. I would say my son is mildly speech delayed but at the back end of typical, lots of single words, 2-3 word combos etc.
it’s hard to know what level his understanding is at really. He can identify objects by their colour so for example when tidying the toys away I tell him to put the red Dino away and he will then I’ll say blue car and he will get that one. I do believe his attention and listening is probably what needs the most work. We have a SALT coming to do an initial assessment and will also have a look to see for any signs of ASD. Also got a hearing check on Tuesday too see for glue ear.
he understands things like -
do you want to go to grandparents - he will respond yes or no
go to the park
let’s get brother from school etc etc.
knows colours, counts to 20 and can identify numbers 1-10.
but I don’t feel he is conversing with me yet. So wouldn’t respond to questions like - have you had a good day at nursery, or what did you do at nursery?

nursery have no concerns at the moment.
TIA! x
