Really that.

Son has all the non academic stuff under his belt like going to toilet independently. Academically though he seems quite slow. We’ve been doing phonemes at home but he really has no
understanding. No matter how many times I sound out cat he will still say it begins with a 😫

I really wouldn't bother with any academic stuff, and I gave 2 DC with fairly decent exam results.

Get his eyes tested, that's one reason DD struggled at first.

Get some outdoor chalks and finger paints so he gets used to drawing and mark making.

Read stories so that he is used to sitting and listening. You could see if the library has some books that he's interested in.

And do this 5 year SLT progress checker just to make sure his language and understanding are where they should be.

Is he interested in numbers at all? You could try him with some simple number games. Pinterest usually has a lot of ideas.
