How do I teach reading 3 year old +

My child is 3.5 and has recently shown an interest in letters, but I don't really know where I should be starting. He knows his numbers 1-12 (counting objects and recognising the numbers).

I've been teaching the sounds that each letter makes, e.g S is sssss, a is aaah etc. He can recognise about 10 lowercase letters and make the correct sound. Is this a good starting point, or should I be doing something else to begin with? I think this is phonics, but I could be wrong!

I've been looking for a guide to follow, but struggling...

Just to add - I am not pushing him to learn his letters, just following his lead. He's recently started asking about letters. (He's been obsessed with numbers for ages so nice to have a change!)

If he's 3.5 is he in Preschool? I'd ask them which method they use.
