Toddler biting

Hey all,

Just looking for some advice. I'm a first time mom, my son is 3. He's a pretty well behaved kid, very sweet. He talks very little and is mostly non verbal, even though he makes plenty of noise. He's going through his terrible threes and has tantrums. When he gets really made he tends to hit, scratch and bite. Not always in that order. When he gets a hold of you, he bites hard.

We have tried many things. Telling him no, letting him know that it hurts, don't bite, restraining, sending him to his room, I do take away his privileges. We've tried to show him over ways to express his frustration, stomping his feet, hitting a pillow ect. But he doesn't do that when he's mad. To my shame I tried to bite him back once and it didn't work. When he bites it hurts and it makes me angry. He is a very loved child and I've never done anything like that before.

Can someone give me ideas on how to handle him biting? I don't want to take away his ability to show his emotions but I just want him to do it in another way.
