5 year old son telling friends what to do

My son is starting to fall out with friends because he is too bossy and tells them.what to do all the time when they are playing a game he has chosen or made up. So if they were playing pirates, he would tell them what their character was, where they can play, even what they can say. They get.annoyed and don't want to play with him sometimes because of this.

How can I help him manage this behaviour?

How does he feel when they no longer want to play with him?

Really sad when he's talking to me, probably angry at school. I talked to him about what he could do to try to manage it and he said he couldn't - that he doesn't like being himself.

If School is still in would it be possible to ask his Teacher if he's struggling socially with his friends there and see if they suggest anything?
