6 yo - anxiety problems

My DS is 6 and has just finished primary 1. He has always been very confident, chatty and according to his teacher, is a very popular boy in his class. He made friends at school very quickly and was very happy until the last couple of weeks until the scools went on holidays-he came home one day crying his eyes out that his friends did not play with him that day. He has been good friends with a bunch of girls and said the girls did not want to play with him. I thought this is just a temporary thing, they are kids and thats normal. But that continued until they went on holiday - everyday before going to school he started to be anxious that his friends wouldn’t play with him. I signed him up for a holiday club today and two of his best girl friends were there, too. When I went to pick him up he was grumpy and started to cry as soon as sat in the car that no one played with him. I can see this affects his self confidence too-he is scared to approach other kids since thinks they won’t play with him. My confident son has turned into an anxious child in two weeks and I am struggling to help him.
