I've raised a people pleaser... what can I do?

My son is 3 nearly 4 and is a fab little lad.

However... I need help with my parenting as I feel like I'm going wrong somewhere but no idea where!

All day he asks me "am I a good boy?"... I've never said he's a bad boy or he's naughty. But it's constant repetition of:

  • "I love you"
  • "I miss you" (when we've been together for days without nursery/work interrupting our time)
  • "you're my best friend"
  • "am I your best friend?"

He is also incredibly submissive and easily led in his friendship groups. Two examples below:

  • at the park with his brand new watch on, his friend just comes over and undoes it and takes it off his wrist and puts it on his own wrist. My son just watches in shock. (After 10 mins I said to his friend it was my sons turn to have it back now).
  • at nursery he almost hero worships a few of the more boisterous children and is often left playing on his own.

He will just let any child push him around.

But also his behaviour with me, constantly checking that I love him has me really worried.

He's still young and so I have time to change my behaviour to help him feel more confident and more at peace in himself. He is so anxious about everything!

What have I done wrong? How can I change? What can I do to help him?

Please be kind I'm genuinely reaching out for some parenting advice and support, I don't know what I don't know, I just know something doesn't feel right and I need to do whatever I can to improve everything for his future.
