My son is now six weeks old and at 2 weeks I found blood in his poo. Went straight to GP and they suspected it was a dairy intolerance. I then went straight onto a dairy and soya free diet (instructed by the GP). However the following morning I wasn't happy with how my son was being, very agitated and upset and seemed like he was in discomfort in his tummy, so we went up to our hospital's paediatric centre on emergency. Again, after having his observations and weight checks, and listening to his symptoms, they also put it down to 'suspected' cows milks intolerance. May I add, the only symptom my son is experiencing is blood in his poo. None of the main symptoms of CMPI, but this is what it was put down to. I was told to wait 4 weeks to give the dairy in his system time to pass and was told the blood would decrease and eventually have none at all 4 days after.
Fast forward to 4 weeks later (1st July) he still has blood in his poo and I was again told by paediatrician that it was CMPI, and as sure this woman was, she still wouldn't diagnose him and help me maintain a healthy diet to get my son on the right track dairy free. I have been back to my GP today on the 2nd July ( however I saw a different doctor to the first appointment) and she is pretty certain it is NOT dairy/ cows milk intolerance (CMPI) as the blood in his poo would've gone by now, even with the slight possibility that a food that I may have digested that may have contained a dairy product could've gone into his system. It would pass within 24 hours.
I have been so careful with what I've been eating to ensure I'm not having anything with any dairy or soya product in to the point I've lost weight because I'm scared to eat anything and thus have weakened my breast milk supply as a result of this.
Might I add, my son has had no rash or eczema, no projectile or discoloured vomiting, sleeps from 11 pm straight through to 6 am, loves his food and has been gaining weight since he was born. He was born 8lbs 9oz on the 19th May, he is now 11lbs 14oz today (2nd July) and ONLY drinks breast milk.
Please can any other mother relate to this and help me get on the right path of other possibilities that could be causing the blood in his stool.
