I have a child in reception and from what I’ve been told at school they are a great pupil, polite, popular and kind to their friends. But when at home it’s a complete different story, they won’t listen to simple instructions, will do the complete opposite of what they are told, telling lies. Tonight they told me they hate me, and have refused any instruction from me. What can I do. I believe I am fair, I explain why we need to do things, I try and listen to them when they want to talk to me but it’s never enough, even at school pick up they’ve been such an obnoxious child, if they were mine I’d probably secretly thinking what an annoying child. We’ve recently had another child so have been cutting older child some slack but I’ve completely lost it tonight, I’ve sworn at them which I know means I’ve completely lost control

I'm sorry that you've had such a tough day. I hope tomorrow goes a bit better for you.

I like the book 1,2,3 magic, it helps to take the emotional reaction out of things and is also very effective for reinforcing boundaries. After the time out, when everyone is calm, then you talk about it.
