Highly strung kids

Got a very highly strung / emotional 5.5 year old. He doesn't have asd or adhd, he's just pretty sensitive, anxious and got a highly strung temperament. He can also be relaxed, sweet and funny etc but when under any perceived stress he struggles, lashes out a lot verbally and becomes really defiant. He often doesn't sleep well.

Just wondering if anyone else had a child like this and how it panned out?! Is he likely to become more resilient as he gets older and develops? What helped ?

Im trying my best but spend a lot of time worrying about him and managing meltdowns.

Has he been assessed for both ASD & ADHD then @wombpaloumbpa? Only you're pretty much describing my DD at that age.

No he hasn't been formally assessed but I am an occupational therapist and worked with people with ASD for 6 years and I'm confident it's not that. Possible adhd I suppose especially with his insomnia but i filled out some screening forms through school for that and nothing came of it. I think he's got a 'highly sensitive' personality and some sensory sensitivities along with that. Will see how he develops because I know age 7 and 8 is when neurodivergence becomes very clear and he's only 5.5 at the moment.

He does have a cousin with ADHD and I'm quite sure his grandma has it too
