At what age...could your dc spell their name (assuming they aren't called something like Christopher or Elizabeth!)

Just curious, when do kids typically manage to spell their name and maybe a few other words of 3 to 5 letters?

DD managed most of her name, minus the final e at just turned 3yo. But it is quite a simple name.

Was a fair bit later before she started sounding out/spelling other CVC words.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 05/04/2008 21:32

Or indeed... Niamh or Siobhan!!! Feel sorry for those kids despite them being pretty names!

FrazzledFairyFay · 05/04/2008 21:33

My DD (2.5) can spell out her name out loud, but I do suspect that it's because she's hear it said so many times - ie it's no different from her reciting baa baa black sheep.

Dottydot · 05/04/2008 21:33

ds1 - I think in reception - his name is nearly as long as christopher, bless him..!

ds2 - much earlier, but his name is only 5 letters long and he's taken to letters and writing.

NotABanana · 05/04/2008 21:34

Can't remember with DS1 but DD was 3

collision · 05/04/2008 21:34

ds2 has bee writing his name for a few months now and he is 3.5y . It has 6 letters and he can write simple words and spell them out to me.

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 05/04/2008 21:35

dd1 was 3 and a half
she has 7 letters in her name

ReallyTired · 05/04/2008 21:35

5th Birthday, but his name is quite difficult. He was able to spell several CVC words including both his cousin's names before he could spell his own.

What held my son back was the ablity to form his letters rather than spell. He could write his name using magnetic letters at four years old.

just b4 age 3, 5 letters in dd name.

somersetmum · 05/04/2008 21:44

By four, and it is one of those names mentioned by CRH She is now halfway through Reception and has asked why there is no "v" in her name. We have told her it is a red word

McDreamy · 05/04/2008 21:47

Between 3 and 4 (5 letter name)

taipo · 05/04/2008 21:49

dd and ds were 3. Both have 4 letter names

LaComtesse · 05/04/2008 21:51

About 4 or 5 herself but she could spot if someone else had misspelt it long before that. The nursery teacher commented that they normally start the children learning the letter sounds of their names first but in my dd's case this wasn't possible due to the spelling of her particular name.

Purplepillow · 05/04/2008 21:51

When dd was 3.6yrs and at playgroup she corrected the teachers when they spelt her name wrong and her name is 7 letters long

cherryredretrochick · 05/04/2008 22:07

my poor old dd2 will never be able to spell her name, I still have to sound it out in my head first, pretty though.

DS1 could spell his name very early - about 2.8 I think( he was very into letters very early on) DS2 can only just say his name at 2.8 but hey, he'll get there

bluenosesaint · 05/04/2008 22:19

dd1 was 3.5 - 4 letters
dd2 was just turned 3 - 6 letters

MNersanonymous · 05/04/2008 22:21

I was just curious as ds did it today and another mum was really surprised and couldn't believe he was his age (2.9).
But I don't think it's that difficult to learn a 4 letter name so I was suprised by her surprise!

he is now moving onto his mate's names but he too loves letters - it's his thing. No sign of being able to write them though

DD was only 2 BUT has only 5 letters and 3 of those are the same. (could also draw a recognisable face at 18 mths. tie shoe laces by 3 and ride a 2 wheel bike by 4.5) yes i know she's gifted [smug emoticon]. she's also quite dyslexic and dead average at age 11.

Pesha · 05/04/2008 22:25

Dd could write her name around 2-3 I think but her name only has 4 letters. And young enough to learn it by rote and not be confused by it not really working phonetically.

DS1 started writing his name a few months ago so 4 and a bit. Hes Nathan so not an easy name and he really wasn't interested in letters and writing until he got settled into reception.

Don't think it matters though.
