Dd2 has her 2 year check next week, realy worried...

Dd2 was 2 in March, she does'nt talk (only says muma) and does'nt seem to understand what we are asking her to do (come when we call her). She also holds her ears alot but does'nt seem to be in any pain.

Her sister (dd1) has AS but started talking at 10 months. Im not sure if dd2 does'nt talk as she can't get a word in with dd1 talking non-stop.

I am worried that dd2 may also have AS

do you think it could be a hearing problem?

I would suggest you take her to GP and ask for a hearing test or see if she can be referred if you are worried.

FWIW the childrens centres are pretty good.My dd was seen by an audiologist and hasglue ear and lots of wax (also other issues but that is by the by).The audiology test is quite simple and non invasive.

Sounds to me like there could be a hearing problem too, do get her tested as soon as possible. Good luck.

She has'nt had a hearing test since she was a few days old which was fine. She tends to hold her ears with certain noises (children playing, hoover etc...)
She has alot of wax and has had a couple infections.

I will ask if they can test her at her check up.

What do they look for at a 2 year check?

I agree with Wrinklytum about the hearing test, just to rule out any possible problems.

It might be worth asking for a referral to see a Paed just in case. Does your dd1 see anyone with her AS? I know that once ds1 had been dx'ed with ASD the SALT and Paed would give ds2 and dd unofficial check-ups to see if there was anything to be concerned about. If you have any appointments coming up for dd1 it's worth asking about dd2.

Dd1 is still waiting to be fully dx'ed, we have been told by a paed and another doctor that she has AS, just waiting to see a speach theropist (sp) and to get it in writing.

Dd2 is alot more layed back than dd1 but is starting to show a few possible traits of as , dd1 hates loud noises and used to cover her ears or screem at loud noises.

Have you seen the CHAT test? It's worth looking at if you have any worries about AS/ASD.

agree with the other posters about getting her hearing checked. Also if you have concerns about her understanding I would look at getting a SALT referral now. And back up instructions and info with gestures/signs/photos/pictures etc, and keep language to bare minimum - DD2, park now! or DD2 nursery now! etc. Could the ear covering just be copying her big sister maybe?

Her sister does'nt cover up her ears anymore as we have taught her other ways of copping with noises she does'nt like (walking away, counting to 10 etc..)

if you can get on a Hanen course (children's centres run "You make the Difference", SALT run "It takes two to talk") you should find that very useful for practical advice to aid communication. Children's centres tend to be pretty well funded - i.e. can lay on a free creche for the course. If you can't access a course, IMHO the books that the courses are based around are useful reading "You make the difference" is about £13, "It takes two to talk" about £25.

Also you might want to look into doing a bit of signing with her (presumably she can imitate OK?). Alternative forms of communicatiion like signing and PECs are very helpful in encouraging speech - as they give visual clues that help kids understand what you are saying, and help them think of the word to say. In terms of signing - Something Special program on Cbeebies, or the Sing and Sign DVDs are good.

Also don't let the HV fob you off with lines like "Let's wait 6 months and see how she goes." If you get dd2's name down on waiting lists now you can always cancel if things improve and dd2 doesn't need them anymore.

My two yr old son only says Mama and woof woof and that is IT so far. I am hoping that he is just one of those children who is good at other non-verbal things.

Have you been refered to a speech development expert yet? I am nervously looking forward to my son's on 29/4

Obviously not sure but it does sound like possible glue ear - DS has/had it. Obviously this wouldn't be a problem at the newborn checkup. But of course it could be AS or it could be that she is just taking her time getting going.

In terms of the signs of autism, there are generally other behaviours that can be picked up, other than delayed, or no, speech. How is you dd socially? Does she share things with you, bring things to show you, etc? Does she point, wave bye bye, etc? Holding her ears could be a way to block out certain sounds. Hope you get some answers soon.

She plays with toys and likes to look at books, she brings me things but does'nt point, i think i have seen her wave once. She has always been a realy easy going child but she has started getting upset if we are in someone elses house, if she cant see me sometimes she will cry.

She knows how do get her own way wthout talking, if she wants a drink she will chuck me her cup. The ears have been a problem for a while, the gp has looked in them but he said they seem fine.

Luckily we have a lovely HV which i get on well with, she was very good when i took dd1 to see her and she refered her straight away.

I would be concerned about the lack of pointing (and limited waving) tbh, this could be something that you could mention at your dd's 2yr check? As your dd1 is already 'in the system', they should take any concerns about dd2 seriously, good luck.

Is ear holding sometimes a sign of ear problems? Just curious as ds used to have poor pronunciation, and loads of ear wax but seems ok now and so I wonder whether he had glue ear but it resolved itself. He also had about 20 words age one but then made very little progress before 2 and still only had about 40 words then (he has very much caught up now I think at around 2.9)

Just curious as I say as I think it must have resolved itself if there was a problem.

Marne - please don't worry about the 2 year check - if your dd does have a hearing problem it is better you find out now and the check isn't a case of pass or fail. It is very much just to identify issues.

Thankyou all for your kind words, i will make sure she gets her ears tested with the HV today. Fingers crossed all will be ok.
