Ds2 is 8 months old now and still can't sit up ... reassure me please!

I'm not overly worried - if I strap him in to his high chair he doesn't slump forwards, and if I hold him on my knee he will sit ok. He has the strength in his trunk, but not the balance.

However, he doesn't want to sit - if I prop him up he just slides down onto his back and rolls around. Hmm. I think the fact that he can't sit is almost certainly because he is not prepared to try

However it would reassure me to know if anyone else has/had babies like this, and when they started sitting (propped or alone)- thank you!

dd2 didn't sit up until about 10 months, I used to feed her in a bumbo until she could (highchair was tripptrapp so she needed to be ups=right)

didn't worry - she was crawling at 5 months (yes) and concentrating on other things.

CarGirl · 04/04/2008 18:40

dd3 was 11 months before she could reliably sit independently, she was huge and I had to keep her in the rear face car seat because of it - it was a complete pain.

Miaou · 04/04/2008 19:16

He is not that big, not had him weighed/measured (4th child bad mummy emoticon ) but I guess he is around 25th centile for both. However he loves being on his tummy and spends a lot of time getting on his hands and feet, though not crawling yet.

Just seems to be a long time past the point where he should be sitting IYKWIM - the other three were sitting confidently on their own at this age.

Mine didn't sit until 9 months but she had problems. Does he seem okay otherwise?

Miaou · 04/04/2008 19:20

Yes, all other development seems fine, notabanana.

And yes Cargirl - although he still fits ok into his rear-facing car seat he won't do for long and there is no way he could manage sat in a stage 2 seat.

My nephew did not do anything at all until he was 13 months he used to sit on his mums lap or lay on his front or back, if you sat him up he'd fall to 1 side then he just started to do everything really quick and it caught his mum a bit off guard. So your babe is fine all healthy and normal and please please dont worry and make the most of it my 1st child walked at 9 and a half months and she was murder she is 10 now and it hasn't changed. as soon as they find their feet they are off. Enjoy!!!

Hi Miaou, when I went to get dd weighed last time (at 7 months, about 6 weeks ago), I mentioned it to the HV because she wasn't sitting either (she crawled around fine, just didn't want to sit) and she said that if she wasn't sitting confidently at 9 months that it might be something to talk about. And actually she has started sitting really well only in the last 2 weeks, once she realised that if she stopped crawling to sit up, that she could play with whatever she had in her hand...

beansontoast · 04/04/2008 20:13

it sounds as thoufgh he is getting there...and not that late in the grand scheme of things...things are going in the right direction.you have no need to worry

also by the sounds of things its just one 'milestone'...so again not a worrying picture.

my dd born end of july sits but prefers to spend time on her back or tummy (like her mother)

Jacksmybaby · 05/04/2008 20:28

10 months here. He crawled before he could sit, at 8.5 months. His problem seemed to be he had no interest in sitting still, just wanted to be on the move! Don't think it's something to be worried about at all at this stage.

Miaou · 06/04/2008 14:11

Thanks for this, sorry forgot to come back to this thread. I didn't, and don't, really think it is a problem but it's always nice to know I'm not the only one - don't know anyone with RL babies who don't/didn't sit at this age!

Miaou - My 4th child (nearly 9 months) still can't sit up or crawl. (He rolls over front to back and back to front.) I do prop him up with pillows sometimes but his balance is hopeless.

helenelisabeth · 06/04/2008 21:45

Miaou, as you know, all children are different, I personally have found that my 2 DDs have done things so different as DD1 preferred to be on her front therefore sat up far later but DD2 has been sitting up since 5 months old but HATES to be on her tummy. If you are worried speak to your HV/GP but as most people on her have said, he will sit in his own time. My friend's (who is a HV) DD wasn't sitting up unaided when I last saw her and she was nearly 8 months and she wasn't concerned in the slightest.

FAQ · 06/04/2008 21:48

DS1 and 2 both sat up at 5 months.

DS3 has just in the last 2 weeks learned to sit up unaided (at the same time as he learned to crawl/pull himself to standing and push himself into sitting position on his own!). He's nearly 10 1/2 months old!!!

Miaou · 07/04/2008 08:57

Just shows how different they all are, I guess! Helenelisabeth, you make a good point - ds2 loves to be on his tummy, the other three all hated it, so I guess that was even more of an incentive for them to get sitting up. I'm sure he'll get there in the end.
