hi there

just wondering what other 10 month olds are doing re sleep.

Still 2 naps a day? At what times and for how long? When is bedtime and morning wakeup?

DD seems to need a sleep from about 9:30 till 11 and another from about 2:30 till 4 -- or less depending on the day. She also sleeps from 7:30 till 6:30 at night (or less depending on her brother's determination to get her up in the morning! They share a room).

Thx

My oldest is nearly 3, and still loves having a nap around lunch time. Now that kindergarten starts at 12.45pm it can be a bit tricky 2days a week, but my only golden rule is to let him nap-- until no later than 4pm. Otherwise he'll never go to bed at 7.
He cannot make it the whole day, really, and he does get his 12hrs at night!

At 10months, he slept twice a day, definitely. Loved it. Same thing then. Not beyond 4.30pm and it was fine. Some luurrve their sleep, others will stop of their own accord.
But it never affected our day, or what was planned, because he'd easily sleep in the buggy when out too, so I was never tied to the house at those times.

goodness i'm bergen.
DS loves a nap, problem is he hates waking up and is a nightmare child if I wake him. however if I let him sleep, he'd sleep 3 or 4 hours in the afternoon, and wake up at 5am (or earlier )! Can't let him nap at all now as a result! At least he sleeps till 6 though...sigh.

Guess I'll have to see what DD is like when she's a bit older...

My dd (11 months yesterday) usually:-

Wakes - 8 am
Naps - 10.30-11.15 am
Nap - 2.30-4 pm
Bed - 7.30 pm

Obviously it varies but is usually 2 naps - 1 of 45 mins and 1 of an hour & half

flowerybeanbag · 03/04/2008 10:58

DS is nearly 11 mo, and his usual routine is

UP 6.30
Sleep 9 - 10.30 or 9 - 9.45
Sleep 2 - 2.45 or 2 - 3.30 depending how long in the morning
Bed 7.00

Having said that, he unilaterally decided this morning that he didn't want a nap and just made a lot of noise in his cot for 45 mins before screaming to be got up again.

I expect he'll be moody the rest of the morning. Marvellous.

lilQuidditchKel · 03/04/2008 11:06

blimey TillyScout I would give anything for an 8am wakeup!

thx for the replies ladies

I found with DS that the morning nap got later and later, till it was happening so near to lunchtime that I only allowed a catnap in the morning, then put him down straight after lunch for a longer sleep.

Given the way he's turned out though I guess I better not repeat that with DD!!

My DS is the same age as Flowery's, he's now on one sleep at 12 noon for about 2 hours. I stopped the two naps when it was suggested to me that it might stop his early waking (I got a bit tired of seeing 4:45am every morning). It seemed to work, he now generally sleeps from 7:30pm to 6:30am. It's a bit of a nightmare though during the morning, if I take him anywhere in the car he's fast asleep and then it's a nightmare to get him to have a proper nap after lunch.

PuppyDogTails · 03/04/2008 11:14

My DS has always seemed to need less sleep than everyone elses!

bergentulip · 03/04/2008 11:16

lilQ - don't get me wrong, if I do wake DS up at some point because he seems to be sleeping too late, however nicely, he will be a misery for about half an hour. I just figure, better that then have him up til 10 that night being a horror and refusing to stay in bed..... lesser of two evils.
It's not all rays of sunshine round here-- and this kindergarten thing is a nightmare!! What kind of time is that to start? Surely most children that age are either eating their lunch or napping?
But, I guess, it gets them ready for school, and I am just lucky/unusual to have a child that will still sleep in the middle of the day.

So as not to go off on a tangent, I think re napping, just follow your child's lead a bit. there is no right or wrong age to stop with the naps. It's only when the nighttime sleep is affected that it's time to reevaluate.

bergentulip · 03/04/2008 11:17

One friend I have has 2 boys, and neither of them have ever napped, the youngest ceasing to sleep in the day at about 9months, and surviving perfectly well on it - don't know how she does not go round the bend!!
(although they sleep til 8.30 in the morning if allowed, so can't be all that bad!)

TillyScoutsmum · 03/04/2008 11:18

lilQ - the 8 am wake up is great - unfortunately though, it seems to just compensate for the times she still wakes up in the night (usually at least twice)... It could be worse though - she could wake up lots in the night AND still wake up early

lilQuidditchKel · 03/04/2008 13:56

Bergentuulip - I def agree 12:45 is such a wrong time to start kindergarten. I was just watching some kids turn up to school while I ate lunch at a local cafe and thought, goodness what a PITA it would be if they made my kids start in the afternoon? Morning is by far their more pleasant time to be out in public!!!

Tilly, it def could be worse! I'm afraid I still get woken up 9/10 nights at least once, as well as early in the morning! Usually it's DS wailing about something his sleep - half the time he wakes up and needs 20-30 minutes of bedside comforting. I thought this was going to end by now (he's 2)! He's the one who won't nap in the day without becoming an utter monster. Honestly, in DS's ideal world, i reckon he'd be most happy if he could wake up at 4:30am, nap from 1 till 5, then stay up till 8pm. Eight hours at night, 4 in the afternoon...

NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!

Thank God for chocolate and coffee is all I can say. And yes, I know, I know, I did it to myself, having 2 so close together, sharing a room. Oh well!

Ds2 is 11 months and gets up at 8am,has a nap 11.30-3pm and then goes to bed at 6.30.

Ds1 will be 3 in June and still loves his nap.He is also up at 8am,has a nap 12.30-3pm,then goes to bed around 7pm.

Neither of them have ever had 2 naps, but their 'nap' is quite a long while.
Of course all babies are different and if your dd is enjoying 2 shorter naps then I think I would be inclined to carry on with them both.

bubblagirl · 03/04/2008 15:58

my ds would only nap once a day he would get up about 6-7

nap around 11-30-12-30

bed at 6-7

by a yr he stopped his naps on his own only occassionally wanting to nap
