3 year old speech delay?

My son is 3 (turned this feb) and while he can talk he is struggling with it. He can say 3 word sentences but isn’t confident in his speech at all.
I try and engage him in play and the most I’ve got is a 4 word sentence.. he started pre school(he’s been in nursery since 9 months old) in April and they have said he is behind with his speech as kids his age are talking longer sentences and able to understand better.. My daughter is almost 9 and is under speech therapy as she has lots of other issues due to being prem..
Is there anyone that’s been through similar with their child? I feel like I never see kids like mine, there always talking like a bigger child and saying and engaging more in their speech! 😞

I read this and didn’t want to read and not reply because I know how awful this feeling is. I have 2 boys. Both I felt were on the latter end of speech. Would you be able to give examples of his speech and how he communicates? Only for more context.

He can say, where are you, Here I am, snack please, love you mummy - sentence wise. So 2/3word sentences.

he can repeat words like if I ask him to say can I have juice.. he’ll repeat it slowly but only if I say it word for word for him.. my daughter has learning difficulties and autism along with speech delay and he is ahead of what she was at this age but I just don’t know why he’s behind too!

he can follow instructions fine but I do find he gets distracted very easy (he is 3 so I know that’s like that for most kids) but pre school have said he scored low on the speech test because he couldn’t follow instructions.. I don’t know it’s just a bit frustrating! 🥲

Yeah okay, and he has all single word use too? I think lots of toddlers won’t follow instructions purely because they don’t want to. What is this test? I think it’s bloody ridiculous

He can use single words yes, he can copy really well but babbles alot when forming a sentence.
im unsure what it’s called but its something they use in pre school to test speech and understanding. I think some of it is rubbish, but it’s not nice to hear.. keep wondering what I’m doing wrong!

Have you had his hearing checked? He sounds very similar to my DD who has glue ear. Our nursery suggested to get my DD hearing checked and I was surprised when glue ear was confirmed.
