HV Advice

Hi, so just looking for some two sense on our situation as I'm at a loss. Baby girl born 36+6, 4lb 15oz, healthy just low birth weight induced because of this. So from birth I fed her every 3 hours for the first few weeks and after showing good weight gain hv said leave her wake for it.

From around 5 weeks she started feeding every 2-3 hours in the day occasionally 4 and then doing a 6 hour stretch at night. She takes between 3-5 oz depending how long it's been.

Fast forward to Friday and we booked her to be weighed just as she's small we want to make sure she's growing okay. She was 7lb 10oz at 7 weeks on her weigh. New HV as old one left said we should be feeding her every 3 hours because she's small.

Right okay I thought, started trying every 3 hours but at night she does not have none of it. She likes to sleep 12-6am and I've tried waking her at 3 for a bottle and she refuses, takes a tiny amount, gets stressed etc. this is becoming a super stressful experience for me and her. Even sometimes in the day if she's fed every 2 hours for her first 3 feeds she wants to be left for a long nap then and will go the 4 and if we wake her before she just doesn't have none of it. She feeds well when she's hungry and like I said takes good amounts.

Any advice? She's being re weighed Thursday now just because she's 1st centile so want to keep an eye on her.

I'd just like to add by having nine of it I mean they are not big nor effective feeds compared to if we'd just leave her, when she wakes naturally she takes a lot more and is way better with feeding! I just feel abit deflated because I tried to explain to HV but she wouldn't listen but I know my baby best I feel!

Is she filling her weight centile and is she bright and alert at times? Does she wake for feeds?

If the answer is yes to all of that I'd go back to how you were. Hungry babies drip centiles and often don't wake for feeds Flowers

Yes! She was born on the 0.4th centile bless her and is on the 1st now! Thank you that's reassuring!

Oh gosh she's doing amazingly well! The centiles are a scale and some will naturally be towards the bottom, just as some will naturally be towards the top.

It sounds to me ax though she's found her own routine abc she's very happy with it Wink

Sorry for all of the typos!

I'd agree, you tried going to three hourly, baby doesn't feed when you try to force it on her, so go back to following baby for now. As long as she's following her centile (roughly), alert and generally content when awake, she's pretty certainly fine. If she starts dropping centiles, then it's time for further discussion.
