Is my sister right...should I think about seeing HV for DDs speach??

She is a second child and I thought they were always slightly delayed then first.

DD2 is 2.3yrs

Her speech isn't great granted. I can uncerstand her alot of the time because im her mum but other people haven't got a clue.

She says a handful of words...mum, dad and her sister and dogs name, poo poo and bye bye is very clear

But she also says fifi, control (TV addict) coke (this is getting really bad isn't it bottle, nanny, aunts name and no-one except myself can understand the sounds she is trying to make. Fifi comes out as EE and control Hohol

So far that is all she says.

My sis has asked if I thought about taking her to the local centre which deals in speech.

Does anyone agree/disagree?

She will TRY and copy words if I ask her to say them but

I would speak to your hv and get a referral to a SALT. It may be nothing and her speech may develop normally in the meantime, but referrals can take time and if there is a problem you will at least have started the ball rolling early.

No never....just those words. Most of them are orders. Such as FIFI means she wants it on TV and she says control to go find it so that i put fifi on. Bottle is demand for bottle and then she will call close family by name.

I used to think that ds1 had delayed speech, at around the same age as your dd. I mentioned it to the HV, and she said not to worry, as his understanding was perfect, and that there is such a broad spectrum of speech at that age (friends dd of the the same could hold a conversation)

She told me that if I was still concerned when he turns 3 (in 5wks) then they can refer me to a specialist, which will check him over.

She also gave me some really good tips, one of them being that when ds1 misprounces something, to repeat in the correct way. Eg, ds1 will say ooze (meaning shoes) and I repeat "do you mean shoes?" It does work, but takes time!

Funnily enough I spoke to a speach therapist about this last wk as I have a lot of mums asking me this question ( I'm a practice nurse) anyway she said they dont see anyone under 3 and only then if they have not started to make any sounds atall. she said 2 nd children often had delayed speech as the older child talks for them but reccomended that parents turn off the TV as it makes it harder for them to distinguish seperate speech and get down on childs level when talking so that they can see your lips move and the shapes your mouth is forming.

It's worth a mention to HV but I guess they will more and likely say it's fine, she sounds like her speech is developing as she's copying you. She also has some clear words.
My ds2 has delayed speech is 2 in a week and has NO words! My HV was reluctant to refer him but spoke to a speech therapist who has agreed to see him, although still awaiting appointment.
We use sign language which I feel reduces his frustration and boosts his confidence that he can get a message across. If you do use signs you must say the word clearly at the same time tho.
I wouldn't worry especailly if she is trying to speak, it will all come in a whoosh!

i wouldn't worry too much. it sounds like she is managing to make herself understood, which is what matters. i think if you give it a few months you will find her speech will all of a sudden take off.

one of my best friends' little girl hardly talked at all until she was over 2 and the words she did use were made up words that only her parents understood. then one day she just started speaking in sentances and never stopped. she is now a very talkative 3 yr old

Really Tulip? Do they not usually see under 3's then? I wonder why? Is it because it's not usually a worry?

Yes DD automatically signed when she was younger and she signs for certain words. We never encouraged it though she just automatically did it.

I said the same to my sis as I heard that 3yrs was the barrier. I have a tape of my eldest counting to 10 at this age.

Maybe 3 is a barrier if they have some speech then? I have just taught ds please and thank you sign, he looks so cute but I wish he would talk!
Ds1 also talked early and made up signs on his own! COmpletely different for ds2!

dd has a SALT and she's 19 months old. she has 7 words but has lost some since christmas. But, she has other SN and was being seen by the SALT for feeding difficulties anyway. They are reviewing her speech monthly at the moment as they were concerned. I was not expecting this as I thought she wasn't too far from the norm! not sure if we would have got a referral if it was just her speech with no other SN though as some of her peers are saying less.

cat - thats what I meant to say about the shoes...we try and word it in a postive way. 3 is def the bench mark for language referrals with our HV.
She really did stress to us that she wasn't concerned because he understands so much. and believe me, he understands a lot

Entropy - I think you would definitely get a faster referral for children with SN. My HV asked me a load of questions relating to my ds's other development and because there are no other problems I have to wait for SALT on the waiting list.....not sure how long, could be 6 months....

my ds wasnt great with words at that age at all seemed to prefare to point at things then name them but could clearly understand most of what we where saying he is now 2.7 and giving back cheek!cant get him to be quiet id give your dd another three months and see how she is then before worrying

No harm in getting the ball rolling in case she does need help, but don't worry.
My ds2 didn't put two words together until he was three, and in fact couldn't say his name properly until he was 5. He is now 6 and although his speech isn't perfect, everyone can understand him now.

I started by asking for a hearing test just to eliminate that possibility, then got a referral from there.
He had group therapy, then a SALT saw him once a week at playgroup, then he al;so had help for the first year of school.

My DS1 had few 'proper' words before the age of 3. Dont get me wrong..he talked LOTS but in his own language! At the age of three his speech just took off! He is in reception now and his vocabulary and clarity of speech is at worst average. DS2 on the other hand started saying words very clearly from the age of 1 - strange and interesting creatures children! I don't think you really have any cause for concern just yet - give it a bit of time. x
