3 year old hitting partner

Our little boy gets really nasty with my partner, hitting and kicking him. He never does this for me but his behaviour has become really testing. Hoping for some advice from you mamas

last night for example he wouldn’t go upstairs for bed, other half calmly said ‘okay if you won’t come up then daddy will carry you because we need to get ready for bed now’ and he just went mad kicking and hitting him

Then in the night he woke up and wouldn’t tell us what was wrong, instead he had the biggest tantrum. Bright red faced. Hitting my partner again, I went in (probably not the best approach) and sat him firmly on his bed and said we don’t hit! Admittedly I didn’t handle it how I should but I don’t know what else to do! He was fully punching him in the face. He’s had a lot on the past few months, his little sister arrived in Feb and he’s gone up into the toddler room at nursery So I understand it might be a lot for him. But how do we approach the hitting? He’s such a lovely, caring little boy then this little devil comes out!
