To preface, my 4 yo DS is being investigated for ASD & ADHD, and has developmental delay and speech delay.
He still has some toileting issues (won't use public toilets or any toilet except the one at home or preschool) but he's been dry at night for nearly a year, with the odd accident, that's never really bothered us as we know night time bedwetting is going to be a thing for a long time.
However, recently he is weeing his bed when awake at night, we know he's awake because after we've said goodnight and gone downstairs (he never wants us to leave and always makes a fuss about this), we can hear him up there chatting away to himself. And a few times a week when we come upstairs to bed, he greets us happily from his room and tells us he's had an accident.
Part of me wonders if he's doing this for some attention as he knows that we'll then have to spend time in his room with him, changing him, changing the sheets etc etc - I feel mean saying that... I never scold him or make him feel bad for this, of course. But the constant washing of bedclothes and his duvet is really getting to me. We have a hygge sheet on the bed so the mattress is protected, however the duvet and duvet cover also ends up getting soaked in urine too, so I'm having to constantly wash all of that, try and get the duvet dry etc.
I try to make sure that I just get the sheets changed ASAP and don't pay him too much attention at the time. I ask to call us if he needs the toilet, but he doesn't answer this or acknowledge it.
We've tried the usual, making sure he drinks enough in the day, no blackcurrant, stopping drinks 3 hours before bed.
I don't mind bedwetting when he's asleep as that can't be helped and is to be expected, just doing it while awake laying in bed is making it hard for me to know how to proceed...
Should I go back to pull-ups at night?
Buy a couple of coverless duvets so there's less to clean?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you in advance!
