25 mth old ds keeps repeating himself - advice please

My ds seems to have quite a good vocabulary and understands what you say to him. However he constantly repeats things. I have tried to ignore it thinking it was just because he had learned a new word or phrase, I have told him we say things only once, which he seems to understand. Yet he still does it - should I be worried? Is it a sign of something? Advice please.

Totally normal, ds (3.7) still does it.

What do you do though? Ignore him or comment? I don't want to stop him talking altogether!

Ooops am I repeating myself? Must be catching it from my two ds's. I call it 'toddler broken record phase' which ds1 had now been in for 18m and ds2 has just started.You switch off after a while honest

Katiepea, your ds sounds perfectly normal from your description.

Is he already speaking in sentences (by sentences, I mean putting 2 words together) or just single words? DD is still at the single word stage but she repeats the same word as she mimicking what she thinks conversation sounds like.

DD (22 months) this morning just said 'hat' & "dinosaur" over and over & it's just her trying words out and enjoying language, it's part of language acquisition. It's good for us to also repeat the word to affirm its usage and helps make other language links, like "Oh you do look lovely in your pink hat, look it's all sparkly"

Toddlers are by nature repetitive.

DD (2.7) repeats things all the time, f'rinstance yesterday's treat was "saturday sunday saturday sunday" non stop. When she's saying it to me, if I repeat it back to her with a nod and smile she stops, if she's just singing it to herself I tune out and let her get on with it!

He is stringing about 5 words together, and I do say "clever boy - yes it's a bus" or whatever. I thought he is perhaps trying to make himself heard in our very noisy house - I should just let him get on with it!

I join in (if I can be bothered) -- as others have said, repeating is normal and sometimes the DCs want you to repeat to affirm what they're saying (or that you understand it). Then add a bit more of your own...

(DD practises particular grammatical constructions over and over "not X, Y!" is a favourite at the moment then she moves on.)
