9 month throwing himself backwards

Hi

my 9 month old has sat unaided for a while but we still have to put cushions behind him as he will just throw himself back when he’s had enough. He’s now standing holding onto the sofa but does the same thing he doesn’t fall down to his bum he stiffens his legs and falls straight backwards like a plank so I can never leave him when standing because I have to catch his head. is this normal?

My little one did this for a while - he’d be stood up and then if he lost balance or got tired he would sort of lean back and got stiff and almost throw his head back, so inevitably he’d always bang his head. It didn’t last too long, you just have to be really close to them all the time. Once he’s got more balance he’ll stop doing it. And he’ll learn to fall and bend. If my son falls now (he’s 1), he will bend so will usually land on his bum rather than on his back.
