Can DD1 hurt herself learning to roll/crawl/sit/walk?

Am a first time mum - I reckon this is very obvious given my silly question!

But am really wondering, can DD1 hurt herself? She is just learning to roll at 18 weeks, but just cant get there yet and falls/rolls back onto her back. She is doing this on the playmat placed on a thin carpet. We do not have carpetted floor. Everytime she rolls back, she cries (in pain or frustration, I have no idea).

Am worry she hurts herself, do not want her to go knocking her head. But somehow she has to learn, hasnt she?

Advice please

Have a lot of floorboards and rugs and sometimes used to put them to lie on a blanket as well as playmat for a bit of extra padding. Didn't bother all of the time though and they are fine!

I would have thought she is crying through frustration rather than pain. She will get there! It's unlikely she will hurt herself if she's on a mat. DS learned to roll first time on a play mat on my tiled kitchen floor and he is fine. He hasn't hurt himself yet apart from when he first learned to sit alone and threw himself back, missed the cushions and hit the back of his head. Thankfully that was in the living room and on a carpet but he still gave himself a shock! I used to worry that he's hurt himself too, normal mummy behaviour and not a silly question at all!

get a bright duvet cover and use the single duvet off the spare bed as a playmat

they do hurt themselves when they start to crawl and walk - falling over and bumping into things. You can baby proof your house - put safety corners on tables, stair gates, fire guard etc - but they will still hurth themselves at some point!

Yes she can, although unlikely when she's learning to roll. Once they start cruising, that's when the tumbling really begins, and they can give themselves some nasty bumps. It's impossible to protect them from everything and I'm not sure I'd want to, falling backwards onto stone/tiles being an exception! I wouldn't fancy either of mine doing that, and I expect them to be fairly hardy when it comes to taking knocks.

Will keep an eye to see what I can do to minimise the bumps here and there, but realise that I cant (and do not want to) be over protective and she is bound to hurt herself once a while learning all the new skills.
