Sudden onset stammering 2.5 year old

My little boy is 2.5 and his speech has always been really good. He has been speaking in 4/5 word sentences for sometime like “Mummy what you doing” or “DS1 stop [something annoying] me!” Or “I don’t like it, it’s hot”

He can count to 20, knows his colours. He seems quite bright, potty trained a few months ago. (Not trying to brag but I have other children so I have a benchmark).

Around a week ago he just starting stammering on the first word of sentences. So if he’s getting my attention it’s Mmmm…. mmmm… maybe x5 or so times.

I suspect his little brain has a lot to say and his mouth just isn’t getting into gear but would be interested to hear other people’s experiences. It’s worse first thing in the morning. My DH asked about it today despite me having told him he’s been doing it - DH doesn’t see him much during the day/first thing so I think this morning is the first time he’s actually heard it himself.

My niece is a teenager and stammers - I seem to remember that started around school age though.

Any experiences or advise please?

Is your neice around very often and are there other family members that stutter? My husband used to stutter until we moved in together and now he rarely stutter because he is not around his siblings that also stutter

We both also actively worked on his stutter as it did impact me as well but we quickly recognised it and it is a learnt skill stuttering

I watched an entire programme about stammering children years ago and it really touched me (not sure why I don't pursue speech and language therapy as a career) but all of them improved with a bit of help and breath exercises.

I also recall my little sister stammering around that age, she didn't start talking until 3.5 and now does not stfu 😊

Thanks both - an update for anyone interested that stumbles on this thread. His stammer went almost as quickly as it came and his speech has exploded. His sentences are now more complex and his speaking definitely picked up a notch in terms of words and conversation.
