6 month old covering ears

My 6 month old has just started to cover his ears in response to certain noises. It isn't all noise and some loud noises he doesn't do it.. he done it today when a lady spoke directly to him in a café. I'm really worried about this in case it is some sort of sensory issue? Or has he just discovered that his ears feel sounds... Or is teething causing his ears to be more sensitive? Had anyone else had their lo do this? Obviously I am now worried about autism and there are also others within the extended family who are on the spectrum. Is this something I should flag with my HV?

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone had their LO do this and if it turned out to be a phase or if it was a sign of something more?
Thank you

Hi, did you find out what it was? How is your baby? My son does the same thing at 5 and half months. He covers his ears at certain sounds like the rustling of bags or someone talking too loud. I’ve noticed he does it more when he’s tired.

Hi

Didn't find out why as of yet, Gp ruled out ear infection so it's not that. He hasn't done it as much recently so hoping it was just a phase. Haven't noticed him doing it more when he's tired. HV advised he seems on track otherwise with development and too early to tell if it's autism related

Thank you, he’s still doing it..I went to the Drs and he ruled out ear infection too. Dr said it could be because my baby had the flu a couple of weeks ago so the bug might still be in his nose and ear area, he said just wait on it, observe and see how he gets on. I find it confusing as before he was okay with all these sounds but suddenly he’s now sensitive towards them. Like I coughed in the morning today and he covered both ears with both hands. I’m worried it’s an early sign of autism but I’m hoping it’s just a phase too.

Hi

Just wondering how your lo is getting on now? Mine randomly has stopped the ear covering so may have just been a habit or he had discovered his ears??
