Toddler hitting when mum arrives for pickup

I’m hoping I’m not alone, my 2 year old has been going through the hitting phase which has been incredibly stressful for me!! But my concern is when I collect my 2 year old from childcare, as soon as I’m in sight, they’re always excited to see me but within moments the first thing they do is hit another child?! Im told during the day my child is the perfect toddler, (within reason, they all have their moments) doesn’t hit others often unless a toy is involved which I know is normal and he also gets hit so it’s not one sided, he is nice and caring yet when I arrive this happens! It’s mortifying for me! I’ve always stepped in and told a firm ‘no we do not hit, that makes me sad’ and I’ve had many conversations with him but im now wondering is me talking to him about hitting making the situation worse? As tonight I ignored it when he did it; the childcare provider told me to do this, was her child he hit, she told him off as we think it’s an attention thing for me but the first thing he does after saying sorry is run to me to tell me what he did and how he shouldn’t do it! I just don’t know what else to try and health visitors has told me it’s normal development and not to worry but I can’t help but worry!
